My Trip To Kampong Glam

My classmates and I went to Kampong Glam on the 7 Nov. It was an enjoyable and knowledgable trip. I learny alot about the Malay culture and heritage. I learnt that Kampong Glam is believed to have obtained its name from the Gelam trees, which were once plentiful there. The hard timber from the trunk was used to repair boats in the old days.Cajepul oil was taken from the leaves of the Gelam tree for medical cures for insect bites, aches and pains, etc. The bark of the tree was also used as weaving material for mats and baskets.
The first residents were Arabs, Malays, Javanese and Bugis. We also visited the Sultan Mosque which was named in honour of Sultan Hussien. The special feature of the Mosque is the dcorative band at the base of the domes made up of glass bottoms. Muslims(followers of Islam) have to clean themselves before going into the mosque to pray and to read the Quran. When praying, the Muslims have to face the dirrection of Mecca( the holy city). There are many shophouses there selling cloth, baskets, perfume(without alcoh), etc. I hope I can go there again.

Kampong Glam

4 Compassionate went to Kampong Glam today. The weather was HOT indeed! Nonetheless, it is better than having a wet weather to dampen our spirits!

The guide's name was Priscilla Ho. She started giving 4C a history of Kg Glam since we started the journey.

Some of the vanishing trades such as this traditional barber shop were sights not to be missed.

I wonder if 4C noticed it. Hmmm...

We also visited the Istana Kg Glam.

Next, we went to the Sultan Mosque where we learnt much more about the Muslims with the demonstration by our dear classmate, Zhafri and explanations by Auntie Ho.

4C then had a little hands-on at traditional games of Capteh and Sepak Takraw.

One of the shops selling alcohol-free perfume.

Then had a 30-min break.

I'm sure it was an extremely fruitful trip for everyone as we live in a multi-racial country. We actually learnt more about stuff we THOUGHT we already knew.

Ahem, I shall leave it to 4C to blog about what they have learnt.

My trip to KAmpong Glam
what a hot day..........there are toys at Kampong Glam and it was quite fun but the toys are too.....expensive.there are no statues in the sultan mosque..in raffles' town plan of 1822.kampong glam was set aside for the Malays and other Muslims....the taps in the courtyard are used for ablution.(to clean oneself)before prayers.Kampong glam is believed to obtained its name from gelam trees. Many Muslims immigrants arrived in Singapore in search of business.the first residents are Arabs , Javanese,Bugis and Malays.thats the end of my story....
(some is copy one)....

My trip to KAMPONG GLAM

My trip to Kampong Glam was Superb. It was very interesting. The tour guide was very kind and clever. She told us many facts which later helped us while doing the workship at the end of the trip.
Well, that place was named kampong Glam by Raffles and was believed to have obtained its namefrom the gelam trees, which were plentiful in the area long ago. The Arabs, Javanese, Bugis and Malays lived there.I gained lots of knowledge there.

What I learned on my trip to Kampong Glam

Well.....
I learned that Kampong Glam was set aside for the Malays and other muslims nad they are followers of Islam. Kampong Galm is believed to have obtained its name from the gelam trees. They were useful to the early settlers who used the hard timber from the trunk of the tree to repair boats.
Also, muslim people ho arrived in Singapore in search of work and business opportunities are Arabs, Javanese, Bugis and Malays. The sultan mosque is named in honour of Sultan Hussien. I also learned a new word ablution and it means to clean oneself. I finally know that taps in the courtyard are used for ablution before their prayer.
